Mark Heidenreich

Terracotta & Ceramic Artist

Mark Heidenreich is a potter, sculptor and artist working in clay from his Terra-Villa studio in the heart of Adelaide. Mark has become most widely acclaimed for his amazing  ability to craft  “giant” terracotta and ceramic  pots and urns.

Many of these large ceramic and terracotta pots are made for outdoor use in large gardens but are equally at home as a feature in a gallery or the glamorous  homes of the rich and famous.  His artistic works are impressive in their scale and beautiful in their form.

Mark has also become well known as the winemaker’s potter – producing large clay pots (also known as qvevri or amphora). The qvevri are used in a traditional  Georgian winemaking technique where the skins are not removed from the white wine grapes prior to fermentation in the large clay pots. There is significant variation in the beautiful forms of the qvevri as each winemaker has a different idea of the perfect pot.

Mark Heidenreich has also worked in close collaboration with the well-known ceramic artist Stephen Bowers.  Stephen often relied on skilled artisans like Mark  to throw the pots which he would then decorate with intricate designs and coloured glazes. These pieces are exhibited at many galleries and private homes throughout Australia and the world. The result of some of the collaboration can be seen in the Palaceware Series.

Mark has also produced many other large terracotta and ceramic artworks in his Adelaide studio – including jardinières, urns, planters, vases.
